Abstract
The writer summarizes recent discoveries and speculation concerning the occurrence, distribution, nature, function, origin, and metabolism of bile salts. The effect of microorganisms upon their metabolism, the gallstone problem, and certain pharmacological effects of bile salts, and new experimental methods are considered. The evolution of bile salts and the information they may supply on the evolutionary history and relationships of animals is emphasized. Keywords
