Abstract
The Saxothuringian zone lies between the Moldanubian block (largely consolidated in late Precambrian time) to the south and the Rhenohercynian zone to the north. It is characterized by exotic blocks of relatively high-grade metamorphic rocks set among very low-grade Palaeozoic sequences. These ‘Zwischengebirge’ (Münchberg, Wildenfels, Frankenberg) were formerly interpreted as metamorphic ‘diapirs’. Recent investigations have led to a revival of the nappe concepts previously proposed by Suess, Wurm, Kossmat and others. Keywords
