Sweep Net and Ground Cloth Sampling for Insects in Soybeans1

Abstract
A comparison of sweep net and ground doth sampling techniques showed that field population estimates by the 2 methods are strongly correlated for soybean pests including southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), velvet-bean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, green cloverworm, Plathypena scabra (F.), corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcala (Forster), and the grape colaspis, Colaspis brunnea (F.). The correlation is not as strong for more mobile species, including predators. The sweep net method is economically more efficient than the ground cloth method for sampling pest species.
