PENICILLIN THERAPY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA HOSPITALS: 1942-1944

Abstract
From 1942 to 1944, 200 patients were treated under the supervision of the authors. All the cases were defined bacteriologically. The types of infections treated and analyzed include 58 patients with staph-ylococcic infections, including bacteremia and osteomyelitis; 19 patients with streptococcic infections, with and without bacteremia; 14 patients with pneumococcic meningitis; 10 patients with meningococcic meningitis; 3 patients with staphylococcic meningitis; 9 patients with pneumococcic pneumonia without empyema; 11 patients with non-pneumococcic pneumonia without empyema; 10 patients with empyema; 10 patients with subacute bacterial endocarditis or endarteritis; 16 patients with sulfonamide-resis-tant gonorrhea; 4 patients with gonorrhea and arthritis; 22 patients with genito-urinary tract infections; and 15 patients with miscellaneous infections. The doses of penicillin used; methods of administration; and the results of treatment are presented.
