SOLUBILITY OF DIMAGNESIUM PHOSPHATE TRIHYDRATE AND TRIMAGNESIUM PHOSPHATE

Abstract
The solubilities in water of dimagnesium phosphate trihydrate (MgHPO4,∙3H2O), trimagnesium phosphate twenty-two hydrate (Mg3 (PO4)2∙22H2O), and anhydrous trimagnesium phosphate (Mg3 (PO4)2) were determined. The solubilities of these phosphates (pKsp) were found to be 5.83 ± 0.01, 23.70 ± 0.12 and 23.28 ± 0.01, respectively. The solubility of dimagnesium phosphate trihydrate was found to be constant in solutions of 0.001 M to 0.020 M MgCl2. The solubility of dimagnesium phosphate trihydrate, however, was decreased in CaCl2, solutions exceeding 0.008 M, indicating that CaCl2 solutions should not be used as equilibrating solutions for soils in which dimagnesium phosphate trihydrate could occur.
