The deuterium and proton-{deuterium} N.M.R. spectra of the partially deuteriated nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl

Abstract
The deuterium spectra of 4-n-pentyl-d11-4′-cyanobiphenyl, (5CB-d11), 4-n-pentyl-d11-2,3,5,6-d4-4′-cyanobiphenyl, (5CB-d15) and 4-n-pentyl-2,2′,3,3′,5,5′,6,6′-d8-4′-cyanobiphenyl (5CB-d8), measured at temperatures within the nematic range, have been analysed to yield both dipolar and quadrupolar splittings. Proton-{deuterium} double resonance experiments on 5CB-d15 have been analysed to give inter-proton dipolar couplings, again at temperatures within the nematic range. These data have been used to determine the elements of the ordering matrices for most of the rigid sub-groups in the molecule.
