Abstract
It is shown that in the strong-coupling limit the spectrum of quantum chromodynamics consists of closed and open strings with quarks at the ends. A Hamiltonian formulation in the axial gauge is used. The theory is reformulated in terms of new canonical variables. Algebraic methods are employed to arrive at these results.
