Abstract
Oscillator strengths are calculated for dipole transitions in the first spectra of Na, K, Rb and Cs, and in the second spectra of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba. Allowance is made for the effect of spin–orbit interaction, which produces perturbation of the energy levels and also configuration mixing. The $$^2S-^2D$$ quadrupole transitions are also considered.
