Cole believes that gastric peristalsis is primarily a function of the muscularis mucosae and not of the regular muscular coats; according to his view the main muscular coat simply maintains tone. He believes that the emptying of the stomach is controlled by contractions of the duodenum. He denies that the pyloric valve contains muscle from the main muscular coats of the stomach. He speaks of systoles of the whole stomach and cycles of peristalsis. Obviously he does not agree with most physiologists and anatomists.
