Abstract
A derivation of the nonrelativistic Fermi-Segrè formula for the probability of finding a valence -electron at the nucleus of an atom in terms of the energy eigenvalues of the electron is presented which makes use of the effective-range method drawn from scattering theory and a refinement of the JBWK method which avoids problems with the Coulomb singularity of the ion core potential.
