Survival of Mouse-Grown Rat Erythrocytes

Abstract
A study was made in rats and mice of the survival of Cr51-labeled red blood cells (RBC) from rats, mice, and mice that had received 950 r of X-rays plus rat bone marrow. The results show that 60 days after treatment RBC from the X-irradiated bone marrow treated mice: (1) have a survival time in the rat similar to that of normal rat RBC viz. about 50 days, and (2) are removed from the circulation of normal mice within 5 days. These observations confirm those of Makinodan (1956) and Vos . (1956) and indicate that by one physiological criterion, RBC from X-irradiated mice given rat bone marrow are of rat type.
