Abstract
Acetaldehyde or pyruvic acid with ultra-violet light gave 30-80% acetylmethylcarbinol. If the light be filtered through acetaldehyde or acetone the aldehyde is not converted to the carbinol but pyruvic acid will yield 100% acetylmethylcarbinol. The existence of the "carboligase" of Neuberg and Hirsch has not been confirmed.
