THE EFFECT OF COMPLETE RENAL INSUFFICIENCY ON THE ACTION OF PARATHYROID HORMONE IN THE DOG

Abstract

Complete renal insufficiency was produced in 14 adult dogs by extirpation of the kidneys, or by ligation of the renal arteries and veins. Within 24 hrs. there was an apparent increase of 1.75 mg.% to 2.32 mg.% in the serum Ca of 4 of the 5 control dogs. The maximum increase in the serum Ca of 7 dogs which were injected with 100 to 300 units of parathyroid extract was 1 mg.% higher than the maximum value observed in the control series. Establishment of hypercalcemia before nephrectomy did not render the dog more susceptible to the overdosage effects of parathyroid extract. The action of parathyroid hormone is evidently dependent upon kidney function.
