Infra-Red Bands in the Spectrum of Difluoromethane

Abstract
Eight absorption bands have been observed in the infra-red spectrum of CH2 F2. Seven of these are believed to be fundamental bands and have been identified as follows; the symmetry species of the band being given in parentheses: ω1(A1)=2949 cm1, ω2(A1)=1116 cm1, ω4(A1)=528.6 cm1, ω6(B1)=3015.2, ω7(B1)=1176.1 cm1, ω8(B2)=1089.7 cm1 and ω9(B2)=1435.4 cm2. A band of species B1 is observed at 2945 cm1. It is identified as ω5+ω9 and from this it is inferred that ω5(A2)=1510.6 cm1. Rotational constants for the normal state are found to be B=0.354 cm1 and CB=1.303 cm1. From these values the values r0(CF)=1.32A and ∠(F-C-S)=107° are obtained assuming that r0(CH)=1.094A and ∠(H-C-H)=110°.
