Abstract
A strain of the anaerobic, cellulolytic, rumen bacterium, R. flavefaciens, requires: organic N as peptone or amino acids; carbohydrate in the form of cellulose, cellobiose, mannose or fructose; and growth factors folic acid, adenine, guanine, and additional unidentified factors in peptone or yeast extract. CO2 strict anaerobiosis, and an incubation temperature in the range of 35 to 45[degree]C are also required. Inasmuch as glucose is not utilized, cellulose digestion apparently does not proceed according to the conventional scheme of extracellular hydrolysis to glucose.
