Studies of insulation in 20 MV and 30 MV vacuum voltage adders

Abstract
Kernforschungszentrum, Karlsruhe, West Germany (KfK) Libra program has developed the design of 20 MeV and 30 MeV light ion ICF drivers based on the Helia approach. Coaxial vacuum regions 10-15 meters long add the voltage of 1 MV induction cells at +20 and +30 MV ion diodes. The ability of these adders to transmit 60 ns shaped pulses from the cells to the diode was modelled by incorporating a Sandia electron loss model in a PSI transmission line code. Good performance was obtained using self-magnetically insulated adders, and the effects of bias currents and voltages were addressed. A non-emitting design was also characterized and appeared promising.
