Abstract
Pressure‐broadening coefficients for the atomic iodine 52P1/2–52P3/2 transition have been measured for several buffer gases using a laser gain technique. The results in MHz/Torr are as follows: CO2, 7.4±0.7; N2, 6.2±0.8; He, 3.6±0.3; Ne, 4.3±0.4; Ar, 5.1±0.5; Kr, 4.4±0.4; and Xe, 3.0±0.3. These values are compared to those predicted by impact theory. Keywords
