Prospect Hill Virus: Serologic Evidence for Infection in Mammalogists

Abstract

To the Editor: Prospect Hill virus, a Bunyavirus that is related to but distinct from Hantaan virus, the etiologic agent of Korean hemorrhagic fever, has recently been isolated from lung tissue of meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) trapped in Frederick, Maryland.^{1 , 2} Other species of crecitid rodents (M. californicus, Clethrionomys rutilus, and Peromyscus maniculatus) in California, Minnesota, and Alaska have antibody against this novel virus, suggesting that Prospect Hill virus or antigenically related viruses are widely distributed in wild rodent populations in the United States.
