Radiative Decay Modes of the Muon

Abstract

A 5-in. freon bubble chamber was used to search for the following decay modes of the ${\mu }^{+}$ meson: $\mathrm{}\left(1\right)\mathrm{} {\mu }^{+}\to e^{+}+\gamma ,$ $\mathrm{}\left(2\right)\mathrm{} {\mu }^{+}\to e^{+}+e^{-}+e^{+},$ $\mathrm{}\left(3\right)\mathrm{} {\mu }^{+}\to e^{+}+{\nu }^0+{\overline{\nu }}^0+\gamma ,$ $\mathrm{}\left(4\right)\mathrm{} {\mu }^{+}\to e^{+}+{\nu }^0+{\overline{\nu }}^0+e^{+}+e^{-}.$ Two exposures were made at the Carnegie Institute of Technology synchrocyclotron. A total of 200 000 pictures were taken yielding 3.3×${10}^5$ ${\mu }^{+}$ meson decays.
