EFFECTS OF HEMOLYZED BLOOD ON CORONARY BLOOD FLOW

Abstract
A potent vasodilator substance is released from red blood cells by mechanical trauma when rapid injns. of isotonic solns. are made into blood. A substance with identical properties is released from laked blood. Evidence is presented suggesting that this vasodilator substance is most likely adenosine triphosphate and/or other closely related compounds. Other unidentified vasodilator substances may also be present. The susceptibility of red blood cells to mechanical trauma is emphasized. Need for critical evaluation of data from expts. employing the extra corporal circulation of blood is pointed out.
