Dye Concentration Profiles Within Single Nylon Filaments1

Abstract
Anionic dye concentration profiles within single drawn filaments have been measured. The shape of the profile is essentially the same as the shape found by Peters, Petropoulos, and McGregor for unoriented nylon films. The fiber formation and orientation processes apparently have no effect on the diffusion mechanism. Use of the concentration profiles to distinguish between chemical and physical causes of differences in dyeing behavior is discussed. Changes in dyebath concentration had no effect on either the shape of the concentration profile or the depth of penetration at a given time.
