Production and detection of the Higgs boson via heavy particles

Abstract
The cross section for neutral-Higgs-boson production in pp or pp¯ collisions from Compton scattering (gcHc) of gluons from charm quarks in the proton is estimated to be in the picobarn range. With Hc¯c or τ¯τ decay, the signature for this process is dramatic: The final state contains four fast charmed particles or two charmed particles in association with τ¯τ which are detectable through decay kinks or gaps. Comparisons are made with the fusion mechanism, which gives a comparable cross section but has much larger backgrounds.
