Low-frequency single-molecule dynamics in incommensurate biphenyl

Abstract
An incoherent-neutron-scattering study of the incommensurate phase transition in biphenyl is reported. Experimental results show a departure from the Debye law in the low-energy part of the pseudodensity of states both on approaching the displacive transition and in the incommensurate phase. The analysis of the associated spectral autocorrelation function leads us to reexamine the interpretation of nuclear-magnetic-resonance results, nuclei having spin I=1/2 and above 1/2, in order to estimate the real values for the gap in the phason branch.
