Low-Frequency Limit of Interchange Instability

Abstract
It is shown under a wide range of conditions, that if any mirroring particles in an axisymmetric toroidal confinement system have a time‐averaged unfavorable drift then a low‐frequency localized instability can result. An example of a geometry in which all particles have time‐averaged favorable drift is given.
