Studies in detoxication

Abstract
On adm. of l-menthone to rabbits 30-40% of it was excreted as hydroxy derivatives conjugated with glucuronic acid; isolation of d-ncomenthyl-glucuronide indicated that part of the menthone (10-15%) is reduced at the carbonyl group. d-isomenthone is also reduced, d-isomenthol being isolated and identified as the glucuronide. On feeding d-neomenthol, 67-68% was excreted in the urine combined with glucuronic acid; figures previously found for d-menthol and d-isomenthol were 70% and 65%. A method is described, with a Shaffer-Hartmann reagent, for the quantitative estimation of conjugated glucuronic acid in 1 ml. urine after feeding menthol derivatives. The following compounds are described for the first time:[long dash]d-neomenthylglucuronide and its ammonium salt and d-neomenthyl 3:5-dinitrobenzoate.
