Renal Clearance of Amylase in Man

Abstract
Amylase clearances, using Van Loon's method for amylase analyses, were determined in 13 human males and 12 females. Mean clearances values were 2.08 ± 0.18 ml/min/1.73 m2 body surface for males with a range of 1.01–3.23 and 1.52 ± 0.15 for females with a range of 0.65–2.72. The difference in mean values for male and female is significant at P < 0.05. The data indicate that amylase clearance remains constant with increasing urine volume and increasing serum amylase concentration. No threshold for amylase excretion is noted. Estimations of total urinary amylase excretion per day and urinary amylase/serum amylase ratios seem to agree with previous findings. Submitted on October 31, 1955
