Abstract
Formation of hydrogenlyases in several spp. of bacteria was studied. In a method for measuring the activity of the culture described, the unit employed is the QH2, i.e., mm.3 of H liberated per mgm. of dry bacteria per hr. Aerating during growth prevented formation of the enzyme in some cases and greatly decreased its production in others. Aerating did not destroy the enzyme in a washed suspension of bacteria. Most organisms grown on an inorganic medium failed to yield hydrogenlyases; those grown in presence of broth contained them.
