EXPERIMENTAL ALLERGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS

Abstract
An acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, characterized by a variety of neurologic manifestations, including motor paralysis, ataxia and tremors, was produced by injn. of brain antigen with "adjuvants" into guinea pigs. There were disseminated foci of perivascular cellular infiltration and demy-elination in the white matter of the spinal cord, cerebellum, mid-brain, and cerebral hemispheres, and also lesions which bore no apparent relation to the blood vessels. This type of encephalomyelitis is interpreted as an allergic condition due to antigen-antibody reactions within the central nervous system.
