Action of an Antiviral Mold Filtrate against MEFl Poliomyelitis Virus in Mice

Abstract
A Penicillium filtrate called "8450" gives demonstrable protection in 12-g. white mice against type 2 poliomyelitis virus. The challenge virus used was the MEF1 strain as passaged many time in 7-day-old hamsters. Such passaged virus possesses sufficient peripheral (intraperit. and intramusc.) virulence for mice to make controlled chemotherapeutic tests possible in mice of this size. These and former expts. (Antibiotics and Chemotherapy 2: 432. 1952) show that 8450 has in vivo activity against MM virus, Semliki forest virus, and type 2 poliomyelitis virus.
