THE EFFECT OF CARBON DIOXIDE ON POLYSACCHARIDE PRODUCTION BY STREPTOCOCCUS BOVIS

Abstract
A requirement of CO2 for slime formation on sucrose gelatin agar was demonstrated in the majority of strains of S. bovis tested. In most cases there appears to be a correlation between slime formation on sucrose gelatin plates incubated in the presence of CO2, inability to ferment mannitol, and greening on horse-blood agar. The CO2 requirement for slime production on sucrose gelatin agar plates can be replaced, in 2 strains tested, by inclusion of 0.1% "Tween 80" in the sucrose gelatin agar medium and by incubating these plates anaerobically. The slime from one strain was purified and identified as a glucose-containing polysaccharide by paper chromatography of the hydrolyzate.
