A GRADIENT OF IRRITABILITY IN THE SMALL INTESTINE

Abstract

In the small bowel of the rabbit the irritability of the muscular coat is graded downward from duodenum to lower ileum. This gradient is probably of importance in directing normal diastalsis because when it is reversed by irritating the lower ileum, the rush waves are inhibited, slowed, brought to a stop and sometimes even turned back.
