A Cyprinodontid Fish, Jordanella floridae, as a Laboratory Animal for Rapid Chronic Bioassays

Abstract

The flagfish (Jordanella floridae) is proposed as a useful laboratory fish for chronic toxicity studies. It matures rapidly, reaching breeding age in 6–8 weeks under optimum conditions, and the fish will spawn at any time of the year. The adults are sexually dichromatic. A complete chronic test may be conducted with this species in as little as 3–4 months.
