Abstract
CHRONIC renal failure connotes the permanent deterioration of the glomerular filtration rate. A urinary creatinine clearance of 5 to 8 ml per minute generally indicates a glomerular filtration rate of less than 5 percent of normal and is usually considered an indication for dialysis treatment, particularly when symptoms of uremia are present. In suitable candidates, kidney transplantation is the best treatment. In other patients, dialysis treatments are usually needed for months or years; in some they must be provided as lifelong therapy.Hemodialysis, in which an extracorporeal dialyzer removes metabolites from the blood, is currently used by approximately 75,000 Americans . . .
