Ten Years of Roadside Pheasant Censuses in Iowa

Abstract
Roadside pheasant census in 33 Iowa counties, 1936[long dash]45, has been fairly successful in helping authorities establish open seasons, closed seasons, bag limits, possession limits, and territorial limitations. Roadside counts were followed by flush counts to determine relationship between birds seen on the road to birds actually in the field. Limitations of the method are: 1) varying weather conditions, vegetative cover, and seasonal factors are not taken into account; 2) personnel should be better trained and more carefully instructed; 3) methods of checking the accuracy of the census are imperfect.
