Fan-beam-tomography noise theory

Abstract
We present a theoretical analysis of noise and tomographic images reconstructed with the convolution backprojection method. This analysis is valid for both the fan-beam geometry with detectors evenly spaced on a curved arc and the parallel-beam geometry. Effects of position within the fan source circle, spatial averaging, and correlations with the projection noise are included. Convolving the data with a triangle filter of width d is shown to reduce the noise variance as d-3.
