FLUORESCENCE OF MICROSPORUM AUDOUINI-INFECTED HAIR

Abstract
WE HAVE conducted a series of experiments to learn more of the nature of Microsporum audouini-infected hairs and the fluorescence produced by this fungus on exposure to the Wood light. In our previous experiments, studies were performed to determine the chemical behavior of the fluorescent substance and its chemical composition. In this portion of our investigation attempts were made to produce fluorescence on artificial media, to inhibit the growth of M. audouini by the addition of various substances to the media, and to determine the longevity of the fungus in infected hair. CULTURAL STUDIES ON PRODUCTION OF FLUORESCENCE A protein-free, vitamin- and mineral-enriched medium was used in all the experiments conducted in this portion of the study. The following formula was used in the preparation of the medium: To each liter of medium was added 1 cc. of sterile mineral solution containing: This mixture was brought to pH 5.5 by
