Abstract

Smith degradation of the capsular polysaccharide from Streptococcus pneumoniae Type 9 (9N in the Danish notation) produced a pentasaccharide derivative whose structure was established by high-resolution two-dimensional n.m.r. and fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry as α-Glcp-(1-3)-β-ManpNAc-(1-4)-β-Glcp-(1-4)-α-GlcpNAc-[1-OCH(CH₂OH)CH(OH)CO₂H] and allowed us to establish the structure of the polysaccharide as -4)-α-GlcpA-(1-3)-α-Glcp-(1-3)-β-ManpNAc-(1-4)-β-Glcp(1-4)-α-GlcpNAc-(1-.
