Abstract
Summary: Metal contents are reported of the soils from a field experiment in which two rates of various organic manures, including sewage sludge and sludge compost, were applied from 1942 to 1961. Changes in the concentrations of some elements in the sludges during the 20 years are also presented. The percentage recoveries of the added metals Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd and Cr in the topsoil varied from 71 to 96%. In 1960, extractability of the metals from the soils by 0·05 M-EDTA was 50% of the aqua regia-soluble total metals. This figure did not vary greatly with metal or with the type of organic manure that was applied.
