Urinary steroids. 1. Formation and determination of 3:5-dinitrobenzoates of alcoholic steroids

Abstract
Conditions were described for the prepn. of 3-5-dinitro-benzoates of steroid alcohols and of urinary non-ketonic alcohol fractions. The 3,5-dinitrobenzoates of steroid alcohols dissolve in acetone and give a stable purple color when dilute ethanolic KOH is added. The conditions for development of max. optical density were studied. All of the esters so far studied obey Beer''s law in the range 0.1-0.5 mg. of ester. The optical density is proportional to the amt. of dinitrobenzoyl radical in esters of mono-and poly-hydroxy compounds.
