F-Band Oscillator Strength Determination in NaCl and KCl

Abstract

The $F$-band oscillator strengths in an x-irradiated NaCl crystal and an x-irradiated and an additively colored KCl crystal have been determined by a new method. The density of centers is determined by measuring the intensity of the paramagnetic resonance of the centers. Expressing the results in the usual way, using Smakula's equation, gives $f=0.87\mathrm{}$ for NaCl and $f=0.85\mathrm{}$ for KCl. Some of the assumptions involved in the use of Smakula's equation are criticized.
