Abstract
A strain of a green rice leafhopper, Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler, resistant to organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides, was collected from Nakagawara, Shikoku Island, Japan. The resistant leafhoppers which originated from the field colony had cholinesterase which was less sensitive to carbamate insecticides, such as carbaryl and propoxur than the susceptible leafhopper. This is the 1st record of an insect species to develop resistance through the mechanism of cholinesterase insensitivity.
