Choice of Oviposition in Drosophila melanogaster

Abstract
Site and frequency of egg laying was studied in D. melanogaster in population cages. The preference of females for depositing their eggs in "pure" sites or in sites previously colonized by preadult forms of the same or of different species was also analyzed. The results indicate a strong gregarious tendency in the selection of the site of oviposition and a marked preference for laying eggs in food previously occupied by larvae. The biological meaning of this tendency is also discussed.
