On Rates of Approach to Equilibrium

Abstract

The limiting conditions on the applicability of an exponential decay law for the rate of approach to equilibrium of a system which is near but not at equilibrium are discussed. Attention is called to a solution which is more general; it consists of a superposition of exponentials, with a spectrum of relaxation times.
