The Effect of Ultra-Violet Light on the Calcium and Phosphorus Metabolism of the Lactating Animal

Abstract
Irradiation of goats by a carbon arc lamp reduced fecal excretion of Ca, with less effect upon the excretion of P. Irradiation probably increases the stimulus to Ca storage during pregnancy and diminishes Ca loss during full lactation. A definite increase in urinary excretion of Ca was noted in only 1 experiment (in which there was already retention of Ca). The influence of ultra-violet light in minimizing the depletion of minerals in certain pathological conditions is considered.
