On the Morphology and Function of Red and White Skeletal Muscle in the AnchoviesEngraulis EncrasicolusL. andE. MordaxGirard

Abstract
During a survey of teleost skeletal muscle (Greer Walker & Pull, 1975) it was found that the morphology of the red or slow muscle fibres of the anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolusL.) was markedly different from that of other species. In transverse section the fibres appear flattened as lamellae and are considerably larger in area than those of comparable species. This paper describes some aspects of their morphology, function and growth in comparison with other species.
