Abstract
Preparation and properties of carnosin, a monoacidic base, are given. With phenolphthalein it appears neutral; with a-naphtholphthalein it is weakly alkaline. For carnosin these indicators are not useful. Methyl orange, cochineal, and methyl red can be used. Carnosin contains an NH2 group as /3-alanine. Hydrolysis of carnosin by H2SO4 can be accomplished in 5 hrs.
