Academic Geriatrics for the Year 2000

Abstract
Estimates of the number of older Americans who will need specialized care by the year 2000 and the number of physicians who will be trained to provide that care foretell a serious disparity. In response to the projected gap, the Institute of Medicine created an ad hoc committee to identify the types of physicians likely to be needed to care for the older population, the training these physicians should receive, and ways to develop academic leaders to shape and deliver that training.
