Turtle Populations in Louisiana

Abstract
Turtle traps were operated in 14 representative bodies of water during the summer of 1947. Pseudemys scripta troostii constituted 33.4-96.2% of the catch, Amyda spinifera ssp. 0-66.6%, Chelydra serpentina 0-17.2%, Macrochelys temminckii 0-12.5%, Kinosternon subrubrum ssp. 0-46.2%, Graptemys p. pseudogeographica 0-3.4%, Sternotherus odoratus 0-5.7%, and Deirochelys reticularia 0-4.4%. Pseudemys, trapped at all localities, was more abundant in quiet, vegetation-crowded waters. Amyda occurred in greatest abundance in streams with some current. Kinosternon, Graptemys, and Deirochelys were each taken from only one locality. Chelydra and Macrochelys were not taken in streams with current and both occurred most abundantly in the same area.
