Abstract
The shift of the energy levels of the -mesonic atom which results from the strong nuclear absorption of the meson is estimated and shown to be comparable with the shift associated with the scattering interaction. It is also shown that the level broadening due to the finite lifetime of the meson in the nucleus is almost entirely produced by the absorption process.
