Abstract
A simple, compact, grazing incidence monochromator designed for isolating the strongest photon lines of He, Ne, and Ar produced in a differentially pumped discharge lamp is described. The light intensity loss of photons with energies hν∼40 eV due to monochromatization is less than a factor of 10, allowing electron count rates to be obtained on a commercial electron spectrometer comparable to those obtained with synchrotron sources. Photoelectron energy distributions of ZnTe and SnTe taken with monochromatized He I and II, and Ne I and II photons demonstrate the usefulness of the discharge‐lamp monochromator source for valence band and core level studies.
